Girls Incorporated of Chattanooga was one of three Girls Inc. affiliates in the country to win a Family Strengthening Award for $10,000, which is funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation and awarded by Girls Inc. national.

This prestigious award focuses on the Girls Inc. outreach efforts with the families of the girls participating in the Cross-Cultural Transitions Program. Most of these families are first-generation immigrants from Guatemala.

Throughout the spring, girls have participated in the Girls Inc. national Project BOLD® curriculum, which teaches girls to lead safer lives by developing skills and strategies for self-defense. Through this program, girls learn how to seek out and talk to a caring adult about personal violence and advocate against gender-specific violence.

“Sadly, violence is a part of the lives of many girls in Chattanooga,” said Bea Lurie, President & CEO. “We believe that it’s never too early to start advocating against violence, especially violence aimed towards girls and women. Project BOLD® teaches girls practical and effective ways to fight personal violence and stand up for their community.”

Huge Success with First Friday Five

Posted by girlsincchatt on February 9, 2009

Thank you to all of our donors and supporters of the First Friday Five with Chattarati. Through your help, we raised more than $700 to send girls to the Discovery Girls Science Camp over spring break.

This was more than twice our orginal goal of $300. The majority of donations were under $20, which shows that a lot of people giving a little bit can make a huge impact.

We appreciate working with the Chattarati team in setting up the First Friday Five. Through your help, seven low-income girls will be able to attend spring break camp. Thank you for your generosity.
