Unum has partnered with Girls Incorporated of Chattanooga by providing a $5,000 grant to be used for camp scholarships for low-income girls. Funding full and partial scholarships, this donation will allow economically disadvantaged girls to attend Girls Inc.’s value-added spring and fall break camps, summer camps and career academies.
“At Unum, we believe in giving back to our communities,” said Bob Best, chief operating officer for Unum. “Helping build well-rounded, civic-minded students today helps build the strong leaders of tomorrow. We are pleased to support Girls Inc. and provide opportunities for young girls to learn through such an effective program,
Girls Inc. has a rich history of providing educational, hands-on and fun programming to an economically and culturally diverse group of girls in the Chattanooga area. Programming is research-based and evaluated, and is age-appropriate for each stage of a girl’s development. Since 2002, Girls Inc. has provided educational school-break camps and teen career academies that focus on academic enhancement and career exploration. Topics have included science, media literacy, economic literacy, healthy living and entrepreneurial skills.
“We’re grateful to Unum for partnering with Girls Inc. to provide scholarships for our girls.
Parents need a safe and nurturing environment for their children during school break,” explained Bea Lurie, president & CEO of Girls Incorporated of Chattanooga. “Without funding from organizations like Unum, many of these girls would not be able to attend camp.”
The Unum grant will provide scholarships for the spring 2009 Discovery Girls camp. The camp will introduce a multi-cultural and economically diverse group of girls to the exciting worlds of astronomy, earth science, engineering and health sciences. Through hands-on activities, girls will explore, ask questions and solve problems. They will also learn about career options in science and engineering through interactive presentations from professional women working in these fields at local companies. Girls will take a fun field trip to the brand new Tellus Museum in Cartersville, Ga. Discovery Girls Science Camp will meet March 16-20. The camp fee is $100 per girl.
