Girls Inc. Now Accepting ‘UnBossed & UnBought’ Nominations

Posted by girlsincchatt on January 6, 2009

When you hear the words, “unbought and unbossed,” does a particular woman come to mind? Do you know someone in the Chattanooga area who has a record of achievement in improving her community or advancing the cause of women?

Girls Incorporated of Chattanooga is now accepting applications from the community for the fifth annual UnBought and UnBossed Awards to be held on April 22, 2009.   Named after Rep. Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman to serve in Congress and run for president, the Unbought and Unbossed Awards refer to her 1972 presidential run when she declared herself to be an “unbought and unbossed” candidate. The 2009 awards will honor ten women from the Chattanooga area who have demonstrated that they are as “determined, intelligent and audacious in [their] beliefs” as was Rep. Chisholm.

Final selections of honorees will be made by the Young Women’s History Project, a group of high school-aged Girls Inc. girls. Nominee applications will be judged for the applicants’ success as trail blazers in their professional careers or service to the community. Each member of the project will select an honoree to interview, deliver a presentation at the awards breakfast on her selected honoree and present that woman with the UnBought and Unbossed award.

Girls Incorporated will accept nominations for the UnBought and UnBossed Awards through January 31. Click here for a nomination form.
